Kitaco is owned by Dr. Tracey Tonkin BVSc (Hons), a reproductive veterinarian and the recipient of the prestigious Dogz Online Breeder of the Year (Long Coat Chihuahuas) award for the past 4 years (2021-2024).
Our breeding philosophy prioritizes health, temperament, and adherence to breed standards. We ensure our dogs' well-being through DNA screening for genetic disorders, heart and eye exams, patella assessments, and hip scoring. We're also actively involved in a long-term study at La Trobe University, investigating the link between breeder practices and puppy development.
Kitaco Kennels is renowned for producing dogs with outstanding breed characteristics and exceptional temperaments. In additional to their success in the show ring both in NZ and Australia, our dogs have graced professional stages and photography sets, showcasing their beauty and trainability. We also have dogs who are working as Canine Therapy dogs.
Our foundation sire, Gr CH, Gr Jnr CH & NZ CH Mystic Legion Narcissus won Best of Breed and 4th in the Toy Group at the NZ National Dog Show in 2024 at the age of 10.
We offer both dog exports and semen export from New Zealand. We handle all the logistics, including transportation and veterinary certifications, for seamless delivery to Australia, Asia, Europe, and the US.

As of 1 January 2022, Dogs New Zealand permits interbreeding between long and smooth coat Chihuahuas. While AmigoReal remains focused on long coats, we may occasionally have smooth coat puppies available.

At Amara Chihuahuas, we take immense pride in being a small boutique kennel that prioritizes quality over quantity. Our Chihuahuas are lovingly raised in our home and are considered cherished members of our family.
As a Dogs New Zealand breeder, we are fully committed to breeding Chihuahuas to the highest standard, with exceptional conformation and temperament. Our dogs undergo rigorous DNA testing and comprehensive health checks to ensure they are free from known breed issues, such as heart, eyes, and patella problems.
We are thrilled to breed Chihuahuas that are not only breathtaking in appearance but also structurally sound and possess wonderful temperaments. Through importing a substantial number of quality dogs, we are able to selectively breed from pedigrees of top kennels worldwide. In fact, we have imported the most new lines into New Zealand and currently have 7 imported dogs in our kennel, including 1 from Bramver's in Japan, 5 from Cheekychi in Australia, and 1 from Countrychi in Australia.
We are wholeheartedly dedicated to continually improving our lines and the breed as a whole and actively collaborate with like-minded breeders who share our vision.
